What is data science anyway?

Unlike data analytics, those disciplines are designed to make foresights for future. It could be revenue/price estimation, fraud detection, P/L forecasts, churn/acquisition predictions or sentiment (text or tweets) analysis.

How about machine learning and AI?

When they do that, they rely on the past (thanks to big data) events, which is also known as inductive research, a.k.a. "teach" your computer by the past data and "train" your future!

What were we doing before data science, machine learning and AI?

We were creating rules (since data was limited) which is know as deductive research and it is a bit old fashioned because of two reasons: First, this is a kind of static, you would need to update your rules/formula constantly. Second, you really don't need to that, since again, big data really makes it unnecessary.
